A member of the list forwarded the following quote from the
November/December 1996 issue of Air Line Pilot Magazine. It is from an
article called Air Safety Forum Report, "Safety and the Future." In it is
a quotation from Capt. John Halliday, chair of the ALPA CRM Committee, who
said:
>"We need to take the information
>from a tremendous amount of research that has been conducted and 'translate'
>it into information that can be given to and used by pilots."
>
>"The top six myths about the automated cockpit, Capt. Halliday added, are
>that the pilot can recover from an automation surprise; the first officer can
>use CRM assertiveness training to prevent an accident; when the automation is
>making a mistake, the pilot can revert to raw data; the pilot can tell that
>the automation is making a mistake; automation reduces cockpit workload; and
>automation is smarter than the pilot."
Well said, Captain! That's what our group is all about!
