How's France treating you?
The Conference you attended interests me. Did anybody discuss either of
the following?
1) The issue of people from different cultures operating in the same
cockpit as a crew.
2) How a pilot performs, CRM wise, as a function of the culture in which
the pilot received their initial flight training. ie. a) A pilot receiving
initial flight training in the same culture as their home culture and b) a
pilot receiving initial flight training in a different culture to their home
culture.
I am particularly interested in the issue of initial flight training.
Regards,
Steve

Subject: Re: Culture
Hello everyone
I have just read the 100 messages that accumulated in the last 10 days
while I was away, and was pleased as always to see discussions around
culture. (And if I read all the emails correctly, including some gaffs
and
very polite saves, it seems we as a group have also learned how to
disagree
agreeably, and with respect. It is a pleasure to be part of this group.)
For the group's interest, there was an ICAO conference on Cross-Cultural
issues in Aviation Safety in Bangkok last week, and it was very
interesting
to be there, as a participant and an observer. Organisational culture
played a prominent part, as did the pilot professional culture. To be
expected, some participants were more able to discuss weaknesses in
their
present system than others (but, ah, the power of indirect
communication).
I believe another event is planned for next year in Chile.
