Has anyone used effective role-playing exercises in the classroom that
concentrates on situational awareness enhancement?

I have not heard good things about the use of "role playing" per se as a
teachnique for teaching SA enhancement. But, I have used a similar
technique, to analyze a real aircraft mishap and "replay" the scenario at an
earlier point in time.
Example...I have an audience of helicopter pilots (same example works well
with fixed wing crews). I make my presentation in three steps:
Step 1: I present a preflight planning model for identifying potential
problems with SA...briefly, what are special mission, environmental,
aircraft, situation and air crew factors you should consider during flight
(reference model developed by Lt Col Jeff Sventek, USAF)
Step 2: I present an actual helicopter mishap involving multiple SA problems
and involving CREW SA. I ask those with knowledge of the mishap to help
(group participation).
Step 3: I ask the group to consider themselves as planer the day prior to
the mishap and ask them to step through the list of mission considerations,
asking them to identify any risk-lowering techniques available. I stop them
only when they introduce factors which would be known only after the mishap.
The technique has been VERY successful with a variety of crew members.
Hope this helps....more info available if you need it. Although it was
taught to military audiences, I feel it would be appropriate in the civil
fleet.
