Hi all,

The recent posts from Dick Jensen, Gerry Joering and others on the
application of reduced-fidelity simulation to LOFT-type scenario
training are most encouraging. I hope that TTSL, CAE and the other
major technology suppliers are listening (at least HTI is!).

The message about using PCs and the rest of the spectrum of training
devices more creatively isn't new. People like Carolyn Prince and
Ed Salas have been demonstrating in trials for several years that
interesting scenarios resulted in good training and good acceptance
from navy pilots. Up the spectrum a bit, look at Neil Johnston's
work at Aer Lingus on generic non-normal checklists during bridge
training. Generic FTDs are very useful environments for cognitive
skills training - and they don't have to be generic in the sense of
anonymous - one CRM trainer does his familiarisation courses on a
Caravelle sim, which is also intended to reinforce some of the iron
needle disciplines.

The thread is also timely, since it gives me an excuse to post the
final programme for the LOFT Scenario Design conference. This
conference is specifically intended to encourage smaller operators
to get into LOFT-type training using whatever resources they have,
from classroom table-top to FFS.

I should add that UK CAA specifically allows LOFTs on FTDs where
an FFS is not available. I think this is the only case outside
the AQP where the regulator allows this, but I'd be glad to hear
of other exemptions. I'd also like to know if Delta uses its CAPTs
(which I seem to remember were once called Situational Awareness
Trainers) for LOFT-type exercises or purely for procedures - and if
for LOFT-type, with what effect?

Cheers,

Rick Heybroek
