John Bent is right. The LOFT is the capstone to all the CRM training and
needs to be in as real an environment as possible. However there is room
for less sophisticated devices to be used in the run up to the final exam
which is the LOFT. Isolating variables to make a point is one of the
oldest teaching methods. While it is somewhat unrealistic, it can be
useful in presenting rather complex ideas. I see the role of the less
capable training device as highlighting pariticular areas of study in an
admittedly artificial manner to make narrowly focused points. What I don't
know is how effective this is or what topics are appropriate for PC type
training. I remember the PLATO system that was in use when I checked out
in the 737-300. It was not user friendly to say the least. It was
inflexible and made one long for human interaction. Computer capabilities
have come a long way since then. Instead of showing short video vignettes
can we have canned situations on PC's with flight sim software? Can we
isolate and highlight our company's performance makers? Can we set up
situations which require inquiry or advocacy or challenges? LOFT training
can be event dependent. Things can go well in LOFT in spite of the best
laid plans of the training department. The LOFT has to be allowed to play
itself out. It would be easier to force a situation on a PC training
device.
