Hi Mike,
I've been traveling, so I just saw your comments about not being allowed to
fly with your wife. I can't offer any systematic research results - since I
don't think there has been any research in this area. But I will offer my 15
years experience flying with my husband. We are both serious pilots,
committed to being professional and safe (as I am sure you are). We
consciously work on our CRM skills, and stay focused on the tasks at hand
whenever we fly. When things go wrong (and we've had a few bad situations)
the increased stress has improved our teamwork. We care a lot about each
other and I think that makes us more professional and safe when the chips are
down. If I were a safety officer, I would encourage couples to fly. We all
have a strong sense of survival and that is enhanced when we care a lot about
our co-pilot partner - a big advantage to the passengers.
