Situation Awareness Management Workshop - Group D Report

Objective: To develop a list of the

  • Content
  • Procedures
  • Techniques

appropriate to the effective

  • Training
  • Observation

of Situation Awareness Management

  • Knowledge
  • Skills
  • Attitudes

in the line environment and during line checks.

The complexity of the task naturally leads to some kind of a matrix.

The group felt that a logical arrangement would show a mission sequence on one axis of the matrix and events or event sets on the other. The SAM observations were designed to fall into one of three classifications:

  • Technical - Aircraft, Procedures
  • Situational - Division of Duties, FMS Management, etc.
  • Psychological (Emotional) - action or reaction

The matrix should be event oriented to control content rather than situation.

The matrix should be flexible enough to apply to the crew as a whole or to an individual.

Observation is not equal to, but is very similar to, assessment. The observation matrix should be:

  • Relevant to the environment and previously learned skills
  • The experience level and motivation of the crew
  • Applicable to a training objective, and
  • Amenable to measurment by outside observers

The matrix must be adaptable to both line and training observations. The matrix should be:

  • Compact enough to accomodate the other elements of CRM
  • Integrated into a technical observation instrument

Two critical criteria were developed:

  • Observer/instructor/evaluator must be trained on the purpose and use of the matrix
  • Any use of the matrix must/should result in a thorough debriefing
